Common Dua's

Here are some common dua’s that all Muslims should learn as part of our daily lives:

Du’a before starting a task

               بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Transliteration: Bismillāh-Ar-Rehman Ar-Raheem

Translation: “In the name of Allah, the entirely merciful, the especially merciful.”

Du’a or greeting for meeting someone

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Transliteration: Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Translation: “May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.”

Du’a before sleeping

اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْـمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Transliteration: AllahhummaBismika-Amootu-Wa-Ahya

Translation: “In Your name, O Allah, I live and die.”

Du’a for finishing a meal

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِى اطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا ، وَجَعَلنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Transliteration: Alhamdulilahil ladhi at’amana, wasaqana, waj’alna min-al Muslimeen

Translation: “Praise be to Allah Who has fed us and given us drink and made us Muslims.”

Du’a for Sneezing

Did you know? Even a simple sneeze is considered a blessing from the great Allah Almighty.

Sneezing is indeed a gift from Allah Almighty, and as Muslims, we should be grateful for it! Not to mention, when someone sneezes, it isn’t just that person who should be thankful.

If you happen to observe someone sneezing, it’s your responsibility to acknowledge and respond to the Dua made by the person who sneezed.

The person who sneezes should recite the following Du’a:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Transliteration: Alhamdulillah
Translation: “
Thanks and all praise be to Allah.”

The person who listens to the sneeze and witnesses the other person reciting the du’a should say the following:

يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ

Transliteration: Yar Hamuk Allah
Translation: “
May Allah have mercy on you.”

Du’a for leaving and entering a home

Following is the du’a for leaving your home:

بِسْمِ اللهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلىَ اللهِ وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ اِلاَّ بِاللهِ

Transliteration: Bismillaahi Tawak’kaltu Alallaahi Wa Laa Hawla Wa Laa Quw’wata illa billaah

Translation: “Allah’s Name we begin with, I place my (full) trust in Allah and there is no Might and Power except with Allah.”

The following Du’a is for entering a home:

بِسْـمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنـا، وَبِسْـمِ اللهِ خَـرَجْنـا، وَعَلـى رَبِّنـا تَوَكّلْـنا

Transliteration: Bismillaahi walajnaa, wa bismillaahi kharajnaa, wa ‘alaaRabblnaa tawakkal naa


Translation: “In the Name of Allah we enter, in the Name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we depend.”

Then say Assalaamu ‘Alaykum to those present in the house.

Du’a for traveling

This du’a is to be recited when traveling:

سُبْحَنَ الَّذِىْ سَخَّرَلَنَا هَذَا وَ مَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنْ وَ اِنَّا اِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنْ

Transliteration: Subhaanal lazee Sakh’khara Lana Haaza Wa Maa Kun’na Lahu Muqrineen Wa In’na ilaa Rab’bina La Munqaliboon

Translation: “Glory be to Allah who has given us control over this (mode of transport) and without his Grace we would not have been able to control it and undoubtedly we are to return towards our Lord.”

Du’a for starting a fast

وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ

Transliteration: Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri Ramadan

Translation: “I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan.”

Du’a for Iftaar (breaking the fast)

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

Transliteration: Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa ala rizq-ika-aftartu

Translation: O Allah! For You I have fasted, and upon your provision, I have broken my fast
